SPRING LEAGUE

 SPRING LEAGUE 2026...

Note with regards to spring league basketball;

As with every spring season, it's important to understand that SBA runs a league during the Fall/Winter "regular season" where there is individual registrations accepted once we open the online registration in early-mid June of each year.  This is not the case for spring basketball.  Spring league is run by EYBA (Edmonton Youth Basketball Assoc.), but they also do not accept individual registrations.

Coaches/Managers/Parents of a regular season team enter their own spring league team into the EYBA, so they are looking to further their experience into spring basketball.  As the SBA Director and Gym Facilitator, some teams that cannot book their own gyms will look for SBA to help book their team a spring practice time; but that's as far as SBA goes with spring league.  As you read below in regards to individuals looking for a team, there are no guarantees about looking to SBA for a team for your child(ren).  However, information as such can be emailed in hopes that one of the formed teams needs a player.  The chances of SBA finding a team for an individual player is very slim.

 SPRING LEAGUE GENERAL INFORMATION:

It is not recommended that new players join for the first time during the spring season.  It's best to join in the fall when teams are set up with more focus on players playing with players with similar skill sets and experience.

  • This is mainly due to the fact that there are way less teams that play in the spring, so less divisions can be made out of the teams that join up.
  • With a short season of (10) games there is less chance of ensuring teams play against teams with similar skills and experience.
  • Sometimes there are extreme blow outs in spring league and new players can become frustrated.
  • In winter season, there are many more teams in each age group/division with more time involved to place teams appropriately and include two seeding rounds to ensure teams play where they fit as a team.
  • For new players, the regular fall/winter season tends to be the best case scenario for their own individual success, regardless of age.

With EYBA's spring league, EYBA accepts teams from anywhere, no affiliation is necessary and teams can be set up anyway somebody wants, possibly from a first-come first served basis to a team that hosts tryouts, etc..  In SBA, because it is more difficult for individuals to book a gym, SBA is involved to help out with that.  The EYBA team fee of $1650 (EYBA team fee) does NOT include our SBA fee of $800 that will need to be paid additionally.  New this year; SBA will accept full payment from Coaches in the amount of $2450 (e-Transfer only to SBA email address noted below).

PAYMENT TO EYBA made directly through their registration process (see below) = $1850 (credit card fee will apply upon making payment - please consider that when charging your individual players).  EYBA accepts e-Transfers.    TEAM REGISTRATION NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE DEADLINE OF MARCH 6TH (OR WHEN DIVISION FILLS UP WHICH IS PREDICTED TO HAPPEN SOONER):  Please read below note from EYBA that includes the registration link.

PAYMENT TO SBA can be e-Tranferred to sbabasketball@shaw.ca.  Credit card payments cannot be accepted for spring league entry.  Email Darlene ASAP if you have registered your team with EYBA and need a practice time/equipment with SBA ($800).  I will then look to book your preference for practice times.  We base our $800 fee on one weekly 1.5 hour slot only.  For more time, more fees will apply.

DIVISIONS FOR 2026:

UNDER 11 BOYS AND GIRLS:  BORN 2014 or later (Play 5v5 w/ size 5 ball on 10' hoops)

For SBA, it is not the same individual registration process like the winter season.  Coaches register their teams (below) with an intent to collect their fees from their players, pay the team fee to SBA for $2250 that includes the EYBA team fee.  SBA will have a cost of gym rentals, equipment rentals at $800.

If you are in need of uniforms, I can place an order with our Supplier, but need 2-3 weeks time to process.  You can email Darlene @ sbabasketball@shaw.ca to advise.  Jerseys are $40 each (no shorts included).

It is common practice for organizations dealing with youth to require all coaches/volunteers to submit a vulnerability criminal record. ARE YOU AN INDIVIDUAL LOOKING TO BE PUT ONTO A SPRING TEAM WAIT LIST?  *YOU CAN SUBMIT THE BELOW INFORMATION.*

This is not meant to discourage individuals from joining, just that there are no guarantees placement can or will be made.  However, a running list of emails with individual player information is kept on file.  Therefore, if you wanted to be put onto my 2024 spring league list of players, you can email Darlene at sbabasketball@shaw.ca with the following information:

  • Player's Name
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth
  • Division:  U11 (2013-2014) / U13 (2011-2012) / U15 (2009-2010) / U18 (2006,2007,2008)
  • If the player would consider playing up in an older division (eg. players born in 2011 that would be currently 13U, could play up in 15U for spring league as that is where they will place in the fall/winter season of 2024-2025).
  • NO OVER-AGED PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED.

**IMPORTANT:  Due to the very large volume of emails, please note '2024 SPRING LEAGUE' your subject line when enquiring about being put on a SL wait list.**

*NOTE:  Your individual fee will be determined by your Coach.*

ARE YOU A COACH IN NEED OF MORE PLAYERS?

If you are a Coach/Parent that cannot find enough players within your own team/group, I can connect you with other Coaches/Parents from the division you want to be involved in having a team in.  You can advise Darlene at the above email address to enquire about contacting other people to get a team put together.

SBA does NOT run its own spring league and the minimum age for EYBA's spring league is 11U.  Other divisions in EYBA include 13U, 15U & 18U.

  • NOTE:  11U spring league is run with hoops at the standard 10' rims so practice times can be set up at regular hoop sized gyms in Sherwood Park as games will be with hoops at that regular height.
    • For this reason, consideration for players should be done with 11Us that move up to 13U in the fall of 2024 and not as much for 11Us that stay in 11U in the fall of 2024.  Of course, this is at Coaches and Parents discretion.

NOTE:  If you are a Coach that already has equipment/uniforms and your own practice gym time, you do not need to contact SBA.  Please proceed to register your team with EYBA as noted above.

EYBA LEAGUE SET UP:

EYBA sets up their spring league with as many divisions as they can have depending on how many teams enter.  Teams can be turned down if there are too many entered with not enough gym time.  Potential tiering of teams is not known until after deadline date.  More information will follow once this information is confirmed.
