EYBA Spring League

NEW THIS SPRING LEAGUE (2019) SEASON:

SBA is teaming up with the newly formed non-profit local Organization called FROST Basketball making even more basketball opportunities available in Sherwood Park.  We are partnering up to better the spring league experience!  You can find more information on the FROST website at FROSTBASKETBALL.CA.  SBA is in full support of FROST as they were/are all involved in SBA at one time or another.  Their mission statement is very similar with ours, basically that the Kids and their development is of upmost importance during the spring season.  NOTE:  We are still working out the details of our partnership so as more information becomes available, it will be posted here.

PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR FROST SPRING BASKETBALL FINAL TRYOUT TIMES FOR SAT., FEB. 23RD.

Please be aware that SBA does NOT put together spring league teams, so we do NOT have open registration during this season.  We do, however, help administer full teams that wish to enter and if the team is in need of gym time and equipment.  We are promoting FROST as a spring 'club' option as noted above.

EDMONTON GRADS BASKETBALL... opportunity for BOYS born in 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007.  Tryouts at MacEwan University on March 13th, 6-8pm.  For more information click HERE.

SPRING LEAGUE GENERAL INFORMATION:

It is not recommended that new players join for the first time during the spring season.  It's best to join in the fall when teams are set up with more focus on players playing with players with similar skill sets and experience.

  • This is mainly due to the fact that there are way less teams that play in the spring, so less divisions can be made out of the teams that join up.
  • With an (8) week, (10) game season there is less chance of ensuring teams play against teams with similar skills and experience.
  • Sometimes there are extreme blow outs in spring league and new players can become frustrated.
  • In winter season, there are many more teams in each age group/division with more time involved to place teams appropriately and include two seeding rounds to ensure teams play where they fit as a team.
  • For new players, the winter season tends to be the best case scenario for their own individual success, regardless of age.

With EYBA's spring league, EYBA accepts teams from anywhere, no affiliation is necessary and teams can be set up anyway somebody wants, possibly from a first-come first served basis to a team that hosts tryouts, etc..  In SBA, because the School boards do not want to deal with individual coaches/parents looking to rent gyms without a practice time, SBA is involved to administer teams that wish to enter into the EYBA spring league.  So, the EYBA team fee of $1600.00 (EYBA charges) is increased to ensure EYBA entry, practice time and use of equipment are included.

DIVISIONS FOR 2019:

UNDER 11 BOYS AND GIRLS:  BORN 2008-2009 (PLAY ON 10' HOOPS)

UNDER 13 BOYS AND GIRLS:  BORN 2006-2007

UNDER 15 BOYS AND GIRLS:  BORN 2004-2005

UNDER 17 BOYS AND GIRLS:  BORN 2001-2003

NOTE FOR ALL DIVISIONS:  PLAYERS CAN PLAY UP AN AGE GROUP (UNDER-AGED) BUT NO OVER-AGED PLAYERS ARE ELIGIBLE IN ANY DIVISION.

2019 15TH ANNUAL EYBA SPRING LEAGUE

POTENTIAL TENTATIVE PLAYING NIGHTS (subject to change pending EYBA gym rentals):

MONDAYS (SOME SATURDAYS) - U13 GIRLS AND U15 BOYS

TUESDAYS (SOME SATURDAYS) - U13 BOYS, U15 GIRLS, U17 GIRLS

WEDNESDAYS (SOME SATURDAYS) - U11 BOYS, U11 GIRLS, U17 BOYS

For SBA, it is not the same individual registration process like the winter season.  Coaches come forward with an intent to collect individual forms, collect their individual fees, etc., then they pay the SBA fee (EYBA fee per team combined with Sherwood Park practice once a week + uniform charges @ $35 per jersey if needed) and enter the team.

The team is then submitted into the EYBA under their appropriate division.  It becomes more difficult for an individual for find a place on a spring team especially without any experience in the current winter season.  Most teams are formed from the winter season and they just want to continue to play.

ARE YOU AN INDIVIDUAL LOOKING TO BE PUT ONTO A SPRING TEAM WAIT LIST?  *YOU CAN SUBMIT THE BELOW INFORMATION (once February is completed).*

This is not meant to discourage individuals from joining, just that there are no guarantees placement can or will be made.  I do however keep a running list of emails with individual player informations.  Therefore, if you wanted to be put onto my 2019 spring league list of players, you can email Darlene at sbabasketball@shaw.ca with the following information (NOTE:  NO NAMES/EMAIL WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL MARCH, 2019):

  • Player's Name
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth
  • Division:  U11 / U13 / U15 / U17
  • If the player would consider playing up in an older division (eg. players born in 2006 that would be currently U13/bantam, could play up in U15/midget for spring league as that is where they will place in the fall/winter season of 2019-2020).

**IMPORTANT:  Due to the very large volume of emails, please make 'SPRING LEAGUE' your subject line when enquiring about being put on an SBA wait list.**

ARE YOU A COACH IN NEED OF MORE PLAYERS?

If you are a Coach/Parent looking for players to put a team together and you cannot find enough players within your own team/group, I can connect you with other Coaches/Parents from the division you want to be involved in having a team in.  You can advise Darlene at the above email address to enquire about contacting other people to get a team put together.

SBA does NOT run its own spring league and the minimum age for EYBA's spring league is U11.  Other divisions in EYBA include U13, U15 & U17.

  • NOTE:  U11 spring league is run with hoops at the standard 10' rims so practice times can be set up at regular hoop sized gyms in Sherwood Park as games will be with hoops at that regular height.
    • For this reason, consideration for players should be done with U11's that move up to U13 in the fall of 2017 and not as much for U11's that stay in U11's in the fall of 2019.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?

EYBA's deadline is March 8th, 2019; however, in order for me to finalize teams into their league, SBA teams MUST have registrations/money in by March 1st, 2019.

AS A COACH, WHEN CAN I SELECT MY PRACTICE TIME?

If you intend to coach a spring league team, please email Darlene to advise so she is aware.

Once a Coach gets a team figured out, he/she will be responsible to fill out the team form and pay the team fees.  Once that's done, a practice time can be selected.

TEAM FORM

If entering a team under SBA, ALL TEAM FORMS can be scanned/emailed to SBA (sbabasketball@shaw.ca), while payment can be made as follows:

REGISTRATION IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL PAYMENT HAS BEEN RECEIVED.  SORRY, NO EXCEPTIONS.

NOTE:  $400 team fee to SBA includes:  8-10 1.5 hour practice times; use of SBA equipment.

Fees do NOT include:  uniforms (should you need to order a jersey, that can be purchased separately for $40 each, no shorts are included).

NOTE:  IF you are a Coach that already has equipment, your own practice gym time, you do not need to register through SBA as you can register directly with EYBA.

EYBA LEAGUE SET UP:

EYBA sets up their spring league with as many divisions as they can have depending on how many teams enter.  Teams can be turned down if there are too many entered with not enough gym time.  Potential tiering of teams is not known until after deadline date.  More information will follow once this information is confirmed.
